Halten Garden Club has a long history of leading or getting involved in Civic Projects. Throughout the decades we have participated in projects for Reisterstown Elementary School, Hampton National Historic Site, Stella Maris Retirement Home, Sherwood Herb Garden at Cromwell Valley Park, Towson Library, the Junior Halten Garden Club during WWII, and Sparks Elementary School.
Since 1916 we have helped to maintain and plant gardens at the Sparks Elementary school. Currently we lead the planting of colorful mums each fall, provided by Kingsdene Nursery, in the roundabout driveway at the Sparks School (top photo). We also plant flowers in the Presidents' Garden each year.Â
Since 1994 we have helped to maintain the Herb Garden at Sherwood House in Cromwell Valley Park (2nd image). In 2022 we funded a huge renovation of the stone patio, new landscape design and installation, and have maintained the garden each year since then. We have monthly visits to the garden to keep invasive plants and unwanted plants out of the garden along with propagating seeds over the winter to refresh the garden each spring. We enjoy sharing what we do with the visitors to the park and we often get help from Cromwell Park community volunteers too. We have also contributed funds for the building of the Accessible Trail at Cromwell Park.
Since 2024 the club has collaborated with the Cylburn Arboretum on Cylburn's City Demonstration Garden Renovation (3rd image). The plot our club is involved with is just north of the mansion and is one of five different demonstration gardens in the project. The Halten Garden Club is working with a landscape architect and Cylburn on the Native Plant Garden plot and are advising on plants that work best in the location.
